The Transatlantic-Australasian Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Working Group (TARPSWG) is proud to formalize its long-standing partnership with the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), strengthening a shared commitment to advancing research, education, collaboration, and improved outcomes for patients with retroperitoneal sarcoma worldwide.
A decade of collaboration with SSO
TARPSWG’s relationship with SSO has developed over many years through consistent engagement, shared academic priorities, and close alignment with SSO’s mission to advance excellence in surgical oncology.
For the past decade, TARPSWG has held its spring in-person meetings in conjunction with the SSO Annual Meeting. These gatherings have brought together surgeons and researchers to support trial development, strategic planning, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
TARPSWG leaders have also contributed to the SSO committee ecosystem, including participation in sarcoma disease-site activities and educational programming for SSO members.
Shared goals of the partnership
The TARPSWG–SSO partnership provides an institutional framework for activities that have been closely aligned for many years. Through this collaboration, TARPSWG and SSO will work together to support education, research, guideline development, mentorship, and professional engagement in sarcoma care.
Areas of collaboration may include:
- Joint educational sessions and symposia at SSO Annual Meetings.
- Development of consensus guidelines and best-practice recommendations under SSO auspices.
- Structured mentorship and training opportunities for surgeons pursuing academic careers in sarcoma.
- Educational resources, including webinars and meeting-based programming for SSO members.
- Continued collaboration with the SSO Sarcoma Disease Working Group and relevant SSO committees.
- Cross-promotion of organizational activities, annual meetings, and educational initiatives through websites, newsletters, meeting agendas, and social media channels.
Supporting the next generation of sarcoma surgeons
A formal partnership with SSO creates a clear pathway for early- and mid-career surgeons to engage in high-impact sarcoma research, education, and leadership.
By aligning TARPSWG’s disease-specific expertise with SSO’s governance the partnership will help expand opportunities for surgeon-investigators and strengthen the academic sarcoma community.
A shared commitment to patients worldwide
Retroperitoneal sarcoma remains a rare and complex disease requiring coordinated, multidisciplinary expertise. Through its partnership with SSO, TARPSWG aims to sustain and scale its surgeon-led research model, strengthen international collaboration, and accelerate progress toward better outcomes for patients worldwide.
Together, TARPSWG and SSO are building on a decade of collaboration to advance evidence-based care, support surgical oncology education, and foster the next generation of leaders in sarcoma research.
