Ricardo J Gonzalez, MD, FACS

Dr. Ricardo Gonzalez is a surgical oncologist, Chair of the Sarcoma Department, and Chief of Surgery at Moffitt Cancer Center. He also serves as a member of the Cutaneous Program at Moffitt Cancer Center.  He is an associate professor at the University of South Florida College Of Medicine’s Department of Oncologic Sciences and Department of Surgery.   Dr. Gonzalez’ research and clinical interests include outcomes analyses and management of patients with soft tissue sarcomas, retroperitoneal sarcomas, desmoid tumors, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and head and neck melanoma.   Dr. Gonzalez received his undergraduate degree and medical degree from the University of South Florida and completed a residency in surgery at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.  During his time in Colorado he also completed a 2 year research fellowship in inflammatory biology and resuscitation. He completed his residency training and followed with a fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. While in Houston Texas studying the intricacies of surgical oncology he also completed a research fellowship in tumor biology. As well he was a clinical specialist in anesthesia and critical care, as well as surgical oncology. Prior to joining Moffitt in 2008, Dr. Gonzalez returned to the University of Colorado as an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery’s Division of GI, Tumor and Endocrine Surgery. Dr. Gonzalez received several awards during his training at the University of Colorado, including the J. Cothbert Owens MD, Excellence in Teaching & Patient Care Award, the Earl G. Young Distinguished Researcher Award and outstanding clinical instructor. While at Moffitt Cancer Center he has been the recipient of the Charles Williams, MD Physician of the Year Award, and received the Excellence in Safety Award.   He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Sarcoma Panel, the Connective Tissue Oncology Society and the Society of Surgical Oncology.
